One Red Blood - Gulpilil in the Landscape
Exhibition | One Red Blood
“They say there are no coincidences.”
On 29 November 2021, the day David Gulpilil passed, an artist over 500km away unknowingly photographed a remote salt lake. Within the image, something unexpected emerged: the outline of an Aboriginal face formed by the natural patterns of the land.
This moment became the first sign of One Red Blood.
“We are the brothers and sisters of the world.
Doesn’t matter if you’re bird, snake, fish or kangaroo.
One Red Blood.”
-David Gulpilil
One Red Blood is a tribute exhibition honouring the life and legacy of David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu-actor, cultural bridge, and one of Australia’s most significant figures.
Presented by Phoebe Marson Gulpilil, Damian Walshe-Howling, and Eamon Wyss, the exhibition brings together photography, weaving, storytelling, lineage, and film to explore the deeper connections between land, identity, and memory. What began as a single image unfolds into a series of striking correspondences, between place, time, and presence, that invite reflection rather than explanation.
This is not simply a retrospective, but a meeting point between worlds. Through these works, audiences are offered a more intimate understanding of Gulpilil’s life, his ability to move between cultures, and the enduring knowledge carried within Country.
One Red Blood invites you to consider what the land reveals, and what stories might emerge when we choose to see them.
